Distortion was created as an exploration into manipulating the rather symmetrical forms Richard has historically made. Through the building process, Richard methodically placed each individual piece of wood controlling both the exterior wall profile as well as the thickness of the wall, nudging each piece slightly inwards or outwards depending on the intended final shape.
This sculpture consists of red and white oak, both virgin timber and old growth lumber that was salvaged from old mill buildings. The depth of color in this sculpture is a result from a reaction between iron and the tannins inherently found in oak, and the wide range of tones from deep dark black to warm rich browns is due to the differences and age of the woods Richard has collected.
The one-of-a-kind patterns made by the tiny STACKED wooden pieces achieves a quality reminiscent of basketry and mosaic tile work. While the finely honed finished surfaces undulate ever so slightly under one’s hand, similar to that of hand-built ceramics, inviting one to touch and take in the pleasure of the wood’s surface.
Although this sculpture is one-of-a-kind, Richard’s Signature STACKED process is applicable to any shape, any function, any scale, and any material upon request.

Reclaimed Cherry
This vessel has not been turned on a lathe. It was hand-built hollow, STACKED piece by piece, layer by layer, all the while controlling the wall thickness as well as the profile. This vase was made using reclaimed cherry sourced and salvaged from a variety of local Brooklyn wood shops. The wood's natural coloring shows off warm tones ranging dark oranges to light browns and reds, with a scattering of pale sapwood interspersed. There is no stain involved, but due to cherry's inherent qualities, this piece will darken over time. Once complete, the surface was gently sculpted smooth using a variety of hand held tools, resulting in a finely honed finish with slight undulations, similar to that of hand-built ceramics.

This totem was inspired by the rock cairns left by hikers in the wilderness in order to mark a trail, as well as the illustrations of imagined landscapes by the late American children’s author Theodor Seuss Geisel (Dr. Seuss). Although slightly surreal, this approachable climbing tower of Salvaged Spalted Maple consists of approximately 6500 pieces individually STACKED into over 270 layers. The towering pillar is anchored to the ground by a large chunk of salvaged Spruce which has been charred using the Japanese Shou Sugi Ban technique. The natural splits in the Spruce have been stabilized using three hand-cut butterfly wedges.
