This STACKED Ovoid Vessel was selected by the Brooklyn Museum for the “Brooklyn Artist's Exhibition” and was on view from October 4, 2024 - January 26, 2025.

As an homage to his NYC home, Richard made this vessel from California Redwood salvaged from decommission NYC Water Towers. The rich variety of tones and colors found in in this piece is the result of decades of exposure to the elements and seasonal changes. The wood’s absorption of minerals creates the dark maroons and blacks, while other areas maintain the wood’s natural rosy tones. This varied palette is part of this material’s unique history, a fingerprint of time passed, something to be celebrated and only achieved through reclamation.

This Vessel's shape took inspiration from objects of Classical Antiquity, East Asia, 17th Century Europe, the Italian Renaissance, among others.

The form was created by hand stacking thousands of individual of pieces of this salvaged wood. It is built hollow, similar to a coiled ceramic pot, or an analog 3d printer. Piece by individual piece of wood, layer upon layer, the shape is revealed. Once constructed, the exterior was refined by hand, creating a honed surface with subtle variations unique to the piece.

This series of vessels has not been turned on a lathe. Each is hand-built. STACKED piece by piece, layer by layer, all the while controlling the wall thickness as well as the profile. The "fluted" indentation is created as a result of the building process, intentionally placing each piece to create this profile. If you had a little camera and light, and peered into the interior, you would see the inverse of the indentations. The salvaged wood offcuts were sourced from a variety of local Brooklyn wood shops. The salvaged wood's natural coloring shows off tones ranging from ivory and pale yellow including a smattering of some mid and dark brown in tones. There is no stain involved. Once complete, the surface was shaped using a variety of hand held tools, resulting in a finely honed finish with slight undulations, similar to that of hand-built ceramics.

Reclaimed Oak, mixed species

Part of Richard Haining's STACKED Collection, this wooden vessel with its elongated neck is made from reclaimed oak. The salvaged wood offcuts were sourced from a variety of local Brooklyn wood shops, as well as from deconstructed turn of the century mill and factory buildings from the Northeast. The ebonized finish was achieved with an iron-oxide wash. The reaction between the iron oxide wash and the tannins inherently found in oak, results in tones ranging from shades of black to warm deep browns; there is no "stain" involved.

This vessel was hand-built with tiny blocks of wood; each block being carefully placed to create the desired shape. Once built, the exterior is gently sculpted smooth using a variety of hand tools achieving a polished surface with subtle undulations similar to that of hand-built ceramics.

The wood's natural coloring shows off warm tones ranging from red and maroon to light and mid brown tones, with some paler colors interspersed. There is no stain involved. Once complete, the surface was gently sculpted smooth using a variety of hand held tools, resulting in a finely honed finish with slight undulations, similar to that of hand-built ceramics.

Salvaged Heart Pine

This vessel has not been turned on a lathe. It was hand-built hollow, STACKED piece by piece, layer by layer, all the while controlling the wall thickness as well as the profile. This ringed vessel was made using reclaimed Heart Pine, salvaged from a gutted Brooklyn Brownstone's building joist. These Brownstone’s are all Pre-War, built in the late 1800’s which in turn means these trees were cut down 120+ years ago. The wood's natural coloring shows off tones ranging from light yellows and blonde to dark brown, including some almost black areas where century old nails stained the wood over decades. This is a natural finish and no is stain involved. This old-growth wood is only available through reclamation. Once complete, the surface was gently sculpted smooth using a variety of hand held tools, resulting in a finely honed finish with slight undulations, similar to that of hand-built ceramics.

This process causes the sugars in the wood to burn resulting in the dark dark brown almost blackened surface, which was in turn sealed using my custom varnish process.

Once complete, the surface was gently sculpted smooth using a variety of hand held tools, resulting in a finely honed finish with slight undulations, similar to that of hand-built ceramics.

This STACKED Amphora, entitled the Dressel 1, was commissioned by a client with a love for ancient amphorae. This form was inspired by many of the pieces represented within the synoptic table that archaeologist Heinrich Dressel produced in 1899 based on his study of Roman Amphorae. This Amphora has been patiently created by hand utilizing Old Growth California Redwood, salvaged from a decommissioned NYC Water Tower. Each individual wooden block has been carefully placed piece by piece, layer upon layer resulting in the overall form. Subsequently, the finished vessel was shaped by hand creating a honed surface with subtle undulations. The Dressel 1 is one-of-a-kind.

Poplar, Ash, Silver Gilding

The Phoenix was created NYCxDesign week as part of Colony's group show entitled "Lightness: The Full Spectrum". 

Richard’s work addresses the life-cycle of value.

The gilded form is a direct nod towards vintage trophy cups, while the playful gesture of the arms draws one’s eyes upward, offering a sense of weightlessness, a winged creature preparing to take flight. Although The Phoenix is bright and reflective at it’s inception, the un-lacquered silver gilding will tarnish, lightness will fade, and a new cycle will begin. 

 The materials he uses begin their processed life as something intrinsically valuable. However the remnants are, more often than not, relegated to the waste stream, where they are salvaged by Haining and reborn into one of his “Stacked” pieces.

The salvaged mahogany came from a variety of places, including some from a sinker log from the Amazon River, some from an outdoor patio deck from Eastern Long Island NY, a couple of dumpsters, and quite a bit was sourced from a handful of local Brooklyn wood shops. The wood's natural coloring shows off warm tones ranging from red and maroon to light and mid brown tones, with some paler colors interspersed. There is no stain involved. This odd two headed shape began round and then I decided to split it into a pair of co-joined necks.
